I have no shame in saying I got into foreign music through anime.  On my own at an anime convention setting jrock cds and jpop cds; I decided to just buy an album by recommendation of the seller.  It was Gackt's Mars album.  Well I listened to it a bit; didn't like it LOL and sold it to my friend for $10.  Now I wish I still had it Tongue.  Oh well; then I found this website later on call project J or something and it talked about various bands and offered up a single MP3 by each band.  So I found I liked Hide, Glay, L'arc en ciel, and Malice Mizer.  Well Syuni Kiss sold me and I couldn't believe that was Gackt single.  I went out of my way to find more MM.  Then found a live journal community and a girl uploaded a bunch of Psycho le Cemu for me.  And after that I was sold on Jrock forever.  Shortly after I found this site and was downloading everything.  I didn't even know the bands; I was just getting everything.

Technically the first Jrock artist I listened to was Shazna and then Pierrot as their music was on an anime soundtrack I bought.  But it really wasn't until Malice Mizer and Psycho le Cemu that I got heavily into Jrock.  That was like...five or more years ago I guesstimate.

First band I heard about and listened to was the Gazette. The song was COCKROACH. 2 years ago.
Second would be Malice Mizer. Then the obvious, Dir en grey and Moi dix Mois.

And it was an emo kid who showed J-rock to me. Life has quite unexpected things. <_<;

My first J-rock encounter, I was young as well, but I certainly wasn't as young as 5 and there's no big crazy elaborate "dad was in the Navy" thing going on. Actually it was pretty simple and more of an accident.

I was staying at a friends house in Manhattan because we had been escorted to a concert (we were only 12) and her mother had some things to do the next day, before dropping me off where I live. Her mother wanted to make a stop at Book Off to sell some old CDs, books, etc. and I had never been to a Japanese store of any kind before, so upon entering I kind of stuck close to my friend and her mother. I guess I felt out of place or whatever, being a lone white child with a Japanese mother and daughter in a Japanese store. Anyway, eventually I wandered towards CDs and just kept looking at the different covers, and band names if they were in english. At the time I had just got into harder, darker rock so I was drawn in by the next CD I picked up. BUCK-TICK's "Aku no Hana" album cover stuck out like a sore thumb. Five guys dressed in rather "goth" attire, it just seemed to say "buy me". It was about 13 bucks if I remember correctly. I popped it into my CD player and it was much poppier than I had expected, but none the less, catchy. Needless to say I hadn't realized the album was from 1990 until like.. a week later, but it definitely changed my views on foreign music and opened me up to a whole new "world".

After that came Luna Sea, Kuroyume, X, L'arc, etc. but slowly. I didn't jump right in. BUCK-TICK is by far my favorite Japanese band for many years now and I've went to quite some lengths to collect almost everything they've released (excluding demos, live albums, and compilations).

Yeah, that's the gist of it though.

Strangely enough I had found The song Gekka No yasokyoku from malice mizer stuck in one of my step mania folders,
I played it....i was all like wtf?
I looked em up.....i was all like WTF X 2?
Then I got hooked and began to appreciate how different the sound was........
Then my obsession just snowballed from there....FIN♥

The first Japanese band I listened to, knowing it was Japanese, was X; closely followed by Mucc. Mucc were the band which got me hooked and made me start learning Japanese.
Before that time came The 5,6,7,8s, Pizzicato Five and Anthem. (Hey, I didn't know until now that Anthem were Japanese ^o^; ) Maybe some other heavy metal bands with lyrics in English as well.

My friends and I were looking at an ad with a Japanese idol on it, holding a suspicious looking object. Suddenly one of my friends blurted out: That's a curling iron, you sickos! It would hurt! ♥ She can read minds!
